An Easy, Unique Technique to Overcome Anxiety

Anxiety… It’s a constant companion for many of us. The word itself makes us anxious. Combine it with worry and fear, as we often do, and you end up with a crushing burden that no one could possibly bear alone. Fortunately, you don’t have to.

God gets it. He is with you, always and in all ways. He loves you unconditionally and already knows all about your worries. He doesn’t think less of you for them. In fact, he wants to help you through the circumstances that caused them. He is FOR us, and he wants to be our “worry depository.”

1 Peter 5:7 NIV – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

The following is an anxiety release technique I came up with years ago, while depositing money at the bank drive-thru. It’s been an incredible help over the years. You can do it quickly and easily, anywhere, anytime. I pray it helps you like it does me!

The VIsualization:

Imagine you’re sitting in your car and your anxiety is a big, smelly, hot blanket covering your face, making it hard to breathe. Dig your fingers into it, yank it off, and take several deep, fresh, life-giving breaths. Imagine the anxiety blanket shrinking with each breath, until it’s the size of a sheet of paper. Crumple it into a bunch of tiny pieces and put them on the seat next to you. Do this once for each worry or concern that lent itself to your anxiety.

Now, see yourself pulling up to a bank drive-thru terminal. Put the vehicle in park and feel the hum of it running beneath you. Roll down your window and smell the exhaust fumes. Lean out and feel the door press into your side as you jiggle the deposit container around to get it out of the tube system. Feel where the container is textured or smooth. Notice the coolness of it, and put your fingertips on the closure. Feel its springs give as it pops open.

Gather the papers that represent your worries, anxieties, and cares from the passenger seat and shove them inside. Make sure you include every single piece. Use your fist to smash them in until they compress enough for the container to shut easily. Hear the satisfying click as you close the container and feel the relief of being separated from your worries.

Lean out and put the container back in the vacuum tube. Hear it whir as it pressurizes and the satisfying “THOOMP” of it shooting straight up to God, right into his capable, loving hands. Send it up with a prayer of thanksgiving for freedom and release. You can breathe again. It is done.

Psalm 46:1-2 BSB – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are toppled into the depths of the seas”

Anytime you start to worry over that same thing, just hear the “THOOMP” again. Let it remind you that you released it to a loving, all-powerful God who is working all things for your good (Romans 8:28). Fortunately, when you trust God enough to deposit your worries with him, he transmutes that energy and reinvests it in healing and hope, to give you a beautiful return on your investment. One only a loving Father could give.

Romans 5:3-5 NLT – We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
