How to Replace Fear with Hope – Day 8

Fear: It’s literally a scary topic, but an important one. Some of life’s greatest turning points come from staring fear in the face and acknowledging it, and then recognizing your God is mightier than your worst fear could ever dream of being.

Of course, we get scared of the obvious: rejection, failure, bad things happening, or letting go of something, even if we know it’s unhealthy. However, we are often afraid of positive or surprising things, such as love, intimacy, or success, or even intimidated by the pressure of maintaining the good things in life.

When these situations arise, instead of focusing on the your fear, focus on the reasons you have to overcome it, and the things that give you hope. Focus on the good and healing that will come after you face down your inner boogeyman. Focus on God’s love for you.

When you’re afraid to take positive steps in your life, receive love, etc., prayerfully imagine your future self, having already overcome the fear, and revel in how grateful you feel that you faced it head-on, with the Lord at your back, and didn’t let it rule your life. Imagine all the beauty that will come from it. Picture it over and over until it feels real. Then act. Make it a reality.

(Important note: Be intelligent and keep this healthy, of course! We’re talking about unreasonable fears that make you uncomfortable, not instinctual ones that keep you alive. Don’t cuddle with a Great White or throw yourself in front of a speeding semi, just to prove you can overcome your fear!)

Overflowing Jesus Journal:  Day 8

It’s time to do some self-examination and begin the healing process! Prayer journaling is a powerful way to connect with God, focus our prayers, and make sense of our feelings. With today’s post, we’re continuing the Overflowing Jesus Journal prompts.

In our last two prompts, we discovered the power of our self-talk. Let’s take that a step deeper and explore how fear (often generated by negative self-talk) can derail us, and how releasing our fears to the Lord helps us live the beautiful lives he intended for us.

Before you begin writing, read the following verses and ask yourself: How is fear holding you back from reflecting God to others?

Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV –  Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Isaiah 41:13 NIV – For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Proverbs 3:5 ESV – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Psalm 27:1 MSG  –  Light, space, zest— that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing.

Now write a prayer to God about the following:

  • What would your life look like if you completely let go of your fear and lived in God’s hope?
  • What makes you hopeful? What gives you courage? How can you incorporate more of those things in your life?
  • Release your fears to the Lord, asking him to replace them with his hope, make you brave and wise, and to give you courage to move forward as he would will it, in bold, beautiful ways.
  • Thank God for three blessings you received in the last 24 hours. Remember, no repeats from previous entries!
