How often in life do we get distracted from who we’re with or the thing we’re currently doing because we’re thinking about the next thing? And, how often in life does that lack of focused attention come back to bite us in the butt because we let our distractions flub our attempts or hurt someone’s feelings? For me, perhaps a little too often. I’m working on it.
I keep hearing the saying, “Be where your feet are,” as a reminder to engage in the present moment, and I repeat the little mantra to myself throughout the day. I don’t know where the saying originated, but when I tried to look it up to give the genius who coined it credit, I stumbled across a fabulous little children’s book by Julia Cook with the same name. It. Is. Wonderful! And, it’s not just for kids – it helped this mama a lot.
It’s a reminder that we need to connect our brain to our feet and live a mindful life. It sagely points out how when we pay attention to where we are and who we’re with, beautiful things happen. Our relationships heal and grow, we’re more efficient with our efforts, produce higher quality works, and we end up having more time and less anxiety! Who doesn’t need that? Most important, this focused attention helps us deepen our connection and relationship with Jesus.
Oh, it’s also biblical wisdom.
Proverbs 4:25-26 NIV – 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.
So, friend, I implore you, work today to be where your feet are.
Be in the room you’re in. Focus on the people you’re with and give them the time and energy they deserve.
Commit to honoring the humans in your life by listening and engaging in real ways that let them know they matter to you.
If you’re working on a project, center your attention on it like a champion archer with a target.
When you pray, really pray and show God you’re listening.
You deserve to experience the fullness of life, and being where your feet are will help you do that.
Thanks for reading! Sending love and lots of prayers your way. Be blessed!
