The Mighty Power of “Small” Choices

In life, we make countless choices. Most of those decisions seem tiny and insignificant, but they’re not. Those seemingly small, but infinitely significant choices have an exponential impact that shapes our lives in unimaginable ways. Like a snowball rolling downhill, their cumulative impact grows and picks up speed and if we aren’t careful, they can spin out of control and crash.

Every day, we choose whether or not to listen and demonstrate love, which will either build up or tear down our relationships. We choose between comfort and calling. Tiny choices dictate whether we allocate our money in wise ways that prepare us for our future, or frivolous ways that lead to us being broke and constantly scrambling to get out of a debt hole. We’ve all heard of the latte factor: how one $5 latte per day over ten years adds up to $18,250. Can you think of better things to do with that money, like, I don’t know, make a down payment on a house, build a retirement, start your dream business, or buy a car with cash?

We choose whether to be ethical or play in the gray areas, between looking at our screens or focusing on the people we’re with, and decide whether to take a walk or eat the cheesecake. As a nurse who worked recovering patients from open-heart surgery, I can attest, choosing the cheesecake too often leads to disaster. It’s staggering to think about the cumulative consequences of those choices over time. Don’t let the need for instant gratification destroy your life.

Instead, let persistent wisdom guide you. You won’t see results immediately, because small consistent decisions add up over TIME. Wisdom and patience go hand in hand. However, wisdom and obedience to God are a magical combination that will transform every aspect of your time on this earth.

Proverbs 3: 13-18 (NIV) – Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.

Prayer journal prompts:

  • Ask God to reveal any area of your life where you aren’t making wise choices and write how the impact from those makes you feel.
  • Describe how making consistent wise decisions instead will transform your life over time. Why does it matter to you and how will it impact your loved ones?
  • Pray for the wisdom, persistence, and heart to make consistent, obedient choices in that area.
  • Thank him for guiding you.
  • Pray for someone else by name.
  • Thank him for three blessings in your life right now.
